A Cloud Is A Cloud Is A...

EmilyMedvec_CloudsOverSantaFe

Do you ever wonder what happens to your spirit when you can not see the sky and her basket of clouds? I do. One can not begin to understand New Mexico without realizing how the sky defines the land and mountains below. Every day it brings a range of different light, a theater of cloud forms and the possibility of moisture in some form. When clouds appear, the light changes. Every moment or glimpse upward can become an unforgettable experience. Just seeing the clouds form by mid-day over Santa Fe is one of the gifts of being here. In Santa Fe, they are part of my daily waking experience. Here we have streets with the name "cloud" in them.

Yet, a cloud is a cloud is a cloud no longer.

Instead of looking up and seeing the clouds, more and more people including Realtors now talk about cloud computing.  This is the new buzz word for our global invisible communication channels. No longer is the word "cloud" connected to the sky, land and rain. Instead, clouds now compute for us with a network of remote servers on the Internet where data in all forms is stored, managed and processed. With less and less to store on a local server or personal computer, we can now communicate from our phones.

As we adopt and adapt to the new technologies, we enter the world of cloud computing and perhaps forget to look up from our screens and see the sky. We build ladders to the cloud with our SEO and web sites and blogs and social media in the hopes of connecting to a customer searching for real estate online.

I wonder if this sea change of communication experience is making us forget to look up and truly see the clouds? When was the last time you looked or even wondered if they were still there? Any thoughts?
