Taxes can be off the map and stranger than fiction. Why? First, they are due in a week. Second, this is when I watch my two favorite movies about IRS agents. Yes, I’m serious. Both films change my perspective with a positive attitude and my focus to just get them done.
One of movies takes place in northern New Mexico. The film title is Off The Map. Often like the experience of doing taxes. The story begins with an unpredictable visit from an IRS agent who eventually manages to find a family’s clearly off the grid home to perform an audit. The cast includes Jim True-Frost (IRS agent), Valentina de Angelis (11 year old storyteller), Sam Elliott (a father struggling with inner demons) and Joan Allen (a northern New Mexico free spirit). The film is a story that becomes a journey of self-discovery about taxes and people and the way unexpected new people become a catalyst for change.
The other film title is Stranger Than Fiction. It is all about death and taxes. It is strange and about fiction but not in the usual way. The IRS agent is Will Ferrell. His life is beyond mundane and as predictable as his watch until it is transformed by a voice narrating his life played by Emma Thompson. She is a writer with a decade of writer’s block. Since our IRS agent has become a character in someone else’s novel, he seeks the help of a literary professor (Dustin Hoffman) to help him determine if he is living a tragedy or comedy. In between, he discovers there is more to life than IRS and falls in love with the anarchist baker (Maggie Gyllenhaal) he is assigned to audit. In between, Queen Latifah adds connections to the reality of writing about death and taxes with style.
I encourage you to take a break from the data and numbers and all the stress doing taxes and practicing real estate can bring by renting either one of these gems. If you have seen them, do you give them a thumbs up?
